In France he also earned a doctorate in psychology from the University of Paris. In 1911 Dr. Dorfman immigrated to this country and immediately began teaching at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts; he remained there for six years before moving to Columbia University where he remained for thirty years, ultimately becoming the Dean of the College of Physicians and Surgeons and Dean of the Medical School.

He was an early member of the American Psychological Association and served as its president from 1942-1943. He also served as President of the New York Academy of Medicine. His many honors include honorary degrees from Brown, Clark, Hamilton, and Trinity Colleges; membership in Phi Beta Kappa; The Distinguished Service Award from Brooklyn College; The Distinguished Service Award from Mount Holyoke; The National Order of Merit (France); and Honorary Member status with Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Chi Omega.

His published works include: Introduction to Psychology (New York: Harper); Neuropsychology (New York: Harper); Handbook of Mental Deficiency (New York: Harper); Clinical Neuropsychology (Cambridge: Harvard University Press); and The Conceptual Foundations of Clinical Psychology (Cambridge: Harvard University Press). He died on March 27, 1968 at Columbia University Hospital after a brief illness at age eighty-six.
